13 February – 17 April 2014 (Every Thursday)

Lecturer : Prof. Dr. T. Maniam
Time : 7.00pm – 10.00pm
Venue : DUMC, PJ

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Mental disorders are highly complex because of the interaction on physical, spiritual, social and emotional factors, which mesh together leading to illness. This introduction to mental disorders will be given by Dr. T. Maniam, who is a psychiatrist teaching at a local university. Its aim is to provide information about common mental disorders so that lay counselors, pastors, leaders and people-helpers would be able to detect the presence of mental illness so that such cases are not handled inappropriately. None should suffer unnecessarily because of the failure of their helpers to recognize illness. The course will also cover areas like suicidal behavior, simple steps to assist the sufferers and their families. Some current controversies will also be addressed.
